I was born and raised on the great Northern tundra known as Minnesota. Though my homeland is beautiful (you betcha it is), I always longed for a warmer clime; you know, the kind of place where you don’t have to wear long johns and wool socks nine months out of the year. So, when I was 18, I enrolled at Grinnell College (in Iowa), to study art. Now I know that Iowa doesn’t seem very “southern” to most people, but to me it was practically tropical! Some winter days even got above 10 degrees! After four years I found that, overall, I was still really cold. So I packed up my Bachelor’s degree and whatever I could fit in my car, and jumped back on old I-35, due South.
I had been living in Austin a little less than a year before that fateful day when I saw that Spruce was hiring their first apprentice. Having been a fan of Spruce, and itching to get back to more creative hands-on work, I knew I had to go for it. I brought in my resume and cover letter the next day and scored a second interview for the next week. I knew from the moment I walked in the door that I had finally found my home team; and luckily, Amanda and Lizzie decided to give me a shot. I began my apprenticeship two weeks later, and the rest is history! These days I’m happy, strong, and basking in the warm Texas sun every chance I get.
